The Corpus of Kempe Stained Glass in the UK and Ireland ISBN 0-9513125-1-0
The Kempe Society, one of the leading societies in Britain for the appreciation and study of stained glass, has published a catalogue of the complete British output of the Kempe Studios.
Corpus of Kempe Stained Glass in the UK and Ireland was published in December 2000 by the Kempe Trust, a registered charity set up by the Kempe Societys members to promote the conservation of Kempe glass. The book, which is illustrated and offers a county-by-county guide, has 395 pages. It costs £17.50 (+ £2.50 p&p) from the Kempe Society, 41 York Avenue, Crosby, Liverpool L23 5RN.
Philip Collins, Secretary of the Society, said, The publication of this book is the culmination of over a decade of research. It makes available for the first time in one volume a complete checklist of the glass produced by the Studios from 1869-1934. He paid tribute to the many members of the 500-strong Society who had acted as county recorders under their organiser, Ray Crampin: It has been a monumental task, and the Society owes them a great debt of gratitude.
Charles Eamer Kempe was one of the most important figures in 19th.century ecclesiastical art and design. Glass and church furnishings produced under his care can be found today in cathedrals, churches and private and public buildings throughout the world. Appreciation of the importance of Kempes work and influence has grown since the Kempe Society was founded in 1984 and was boosted by the publication of a full-length study, Master of Glass, by Margaret Stavridi, in 1988.
