UK01	Church of St Mary The Virgin. Marholm. Near Peterborough. Cambridgeshire.	A rare cast iron topped body stone, coffin shaped with winged souls and winged hourglass, erected over a grave after 1863. No identifying founders mark but the text:- IN MEMORY OF ROBERT VERGETTE. DIED NOV. 3RD. 1846. AGED 46 YEARS. ALSO JANE HIS WIFE. DIED SEPT 4TH 1863. AGED 61 YEARS.
UK02	All Saints Church. Madeley Staffordshire.	A three feet six inch cross by W. F. Johnson. To Susan Ledward. 14th August 1920. aged 30 years. Erected by members of the church Sunday school and Bible Classes. IN AFFECTIONATE MEMORY.
UK03	All Saints Churchyard. Mundesley. Norfolk.	Cast Iron grave markers in the churchyard. One of the examples has a small iron cross with it as a foot marker.
UK04	Church of St. Mary Magdalen. Newark. Nottinghamshire.	A large "Wall Tablet" of cast iron in the church garden. Foundry unknown. In the shape of a doorway complete with door on which the text of the inscription is written. Possibly the Door to Heaven, surely not to the other place? When one reads the text it becomes clear that it is most likely the door to the organ loft. SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF WILLIAM BRIDGES WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE ON THE 12TH DAY OF FEBRUARY 1835. AGED 58 YEARS. HE WAS 32 YEARS ORGANIST OF THIS CHURCH. ALSO TO THE MEMORY OF LUCY HIS WIDOW WHO DIED ON THE 14TH DAY OF SEPT. 1836. AGED 52 YEARS. AND OF THEIR FIVE CHILDREN NAMELY WILLIAM. OBT. 1ST MAY 1805 AGED 7 MONTHS. FRANCES ANN. OBT.24TH. JULY 1808 AGED 4YEARS AND 3 MONTHS. LUCY. OBT. 14TH JANUARY 1811. AGED 11 WEEKS. MARY. OBT.13TH JANUARY 1816 AGED 9 YEARS. ROBERT JOHN. Each side of the box contains an inscription cast in raised letters to members of the Cherrington-Bailey Family. The whole stands approximately 6ft 6 inches high and is signed Stanley. Peterborough. As can be seen in the photograph it is in a very precarious condition. East side: IN MEMORY OF RICHARD WILLIAM THE BELOVED SON OF RICHARD CHERRINGTON AND MARY BALEY. UK22	Ordsall Parish Churchyard Retford Nottinghamshire.	This small broken cross to Eva Kate is one of four to the Baker children who all died in 1918. The eldest of the four died first and has a cross just like this one. He was Thomas William and he worked at Bradshaw’s Foundry. He was one of the early Killer Flu victims in the Epidemic which started devastation in 1918. He died on October 30thand his two sisters followed him on November 5th and November 13th, his little brother followed on 16th of November. All four dead in little over a fortnight. The foundry men at Bradshaws made the cross for their work mate when he died and when another followed they did the same for her. They made four in time. The item in the newspaper said:- BAKER. In loving memory of Thomas William Baker, died October 30th 1918; Eva Kate Baker, died November 5th 1918; Mary Jane Baker, died November 13th 1918; and Jonathan Baker, died November 16th, 1918. Let friends forbear to mourn and weep, While sweetly in the dust we sleep; A tiresome world we’ve left behind, A glorious crown we there shall find, An angel took my flowers away, Yet I will not repine, Since Jesus on His bosom wears, The flowers that once were mine. UK66	Roadside A360 nr West Lavington, Salisbury Plain. Wiltshire.	Roadside monument seen on the A360 road about 2 miles south of West Lavington on Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire. AT THIS SPOT. Mr Dean of Imber was Attacked and Robbed by Four Highwaymen in the evening of Octr. 21st 1839. After a spirited pursuit of three hours, one of the Felons BENJAMIN COLCLOUGH fell Dead on Chitterne Down. THOMAS SAUNDERS. GEORGE WATERS. & RICHARD HARRIS, were eventually Captured and were convicted at the ensuing Quarter Sessions at Devises and Transported for the term of Fifteen Years. This Monument is erected by Public Subscription as a warning to those who presumptuously think to escape the punishment God has threatened against Thieves and Robbers.

One only accessible for a photograph and it is signed but the other the same pattern. approx. 40 ins high by 28 ins wide. This one: Two winged souls cast with a crown of heaven above. Signed J ALLEN. FECIT. SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF WILLIAM LANGRISH WHO DIED FEBRY 17TH 1848 AGED 83 YEARS. Second Gravemarker (No illustration, very similar to UK88). SACRED is cast into the curve at the top of the marker. SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF JOHN SON OF HENRY & C. ANN HOLLAND. WHO DIED OCTR 10TH 1842 AGED 10 YEARS. NEITHERYOUNG NOR OLD CAN RESIST DEATH’S AWFUL SUMMONS.

AND MANY YEARS A RESPECTABLE SURGEON IN THIS PARISH. Right Panel:- ALSO THOSE OF CHARLOTTE HIS BELOVED WIFE. WHO DIED NOVEMBER THE 15. 1812. IN THE 47 YEAR OF HER AGE. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF PETER ELWIN ESQR. OF BOOTON HALL. BY HIS FIRST WIFE MISS PASTON OF BALE IN THIS COUNTY. Bottom Narrow Panel Reads:-AS A SMALL TESTIMONY OF RESPECT AND AFFECTION TO THE MEMORY OF SUCH INESTIMABLE PARENTS, THIS TABLET IS INSCRIBED BY THEIR TWO SONS PETER ELWIN AND RICHARD DAVID WILLIAMS

I have shown just one of each with some details and a photograph of the cemetery to show the type of scatter that there is. Small cast iron cross marker, cast inscription, painted white with outline and inscription emphasised in black. IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOHN BREDDY WHO DIED JULY 12TH 19117 AT DUCLE AVENUE MANCHESTER FROM WOUNDS RECEIVED IN ACTION NOVEMBER 9TH 1916. AGED 20 YEARS. REST IN PEACE. There are two markers on this plot, the other one being an official war graves commission headstone.

There is no makers mark but most likely one of Bradshaw’s IN LOVING MEMORY OF WILLIAM WOODWARD WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE NOV. 29TH 1925 AGED 11 YEARS. THY WILL BE DONE.
UK97	Retford Cemetery. Retford. Nottinghamshire.	Cast iron cross of Bradshaws type (Refer to Ordsall). Painted white with lettering in black. The letters were picked out by means of a piece of chamois leather over a cork and being frugal with the paint. Whilst I was taking this picture a lady came up and asked what I was doing. She turned out to be the mother of the young lad whose name is on the cross. I gently explained that I was interested in cast Iron grave markers and I asked her if she would mind answering a few questions. When she realised I was not up to no good she agreed. Ernest, her son had left school at the age of fourteen years and started work, within a couple of weeks he had been taken ill and died shortly after when according to Mrs Wells "His brain turned upside down." By what I could glean it was something like meningitis. She volunteered the information that the Iron Cross was there "because it was all we could afford at the time.t
