Australian Cast Iron Gravemarker Photographic Catalogue

The following selection of Cast Iron Grave markers is a small number from the many found on three visits. Two visits of which were just to South Australia where most of them are, and one visit to the Eyre and York peninsular in South Australia and then on to the Northern Territories to Alice Springs and other places in the north part of Australia.

AUST01	Longreach Queensland, Australia.	Large circle cross said to be locally made as is the small club shaped Grave number P53. ALAN TRAVERS BOISSIER WALKER AGED 2 YEARS. SUFFER LITTLE CHILDREN TO COME UNTO ME. On AUST01. Note the club shaped grave number. Similar to those which used to be in use at Wentworth Woodhouse, England (see UK136) and which two of which are in my Garden in Lincoln. England.
AUST02	Longreach Queensland, Australia.	Cast iron surround and inscription plate at the head. Said again to be locally made . No makers mark.
AUST03	Mt. Morgan Queensland, Australia.	Cast iron wreath stand still in position. A very rare find in the cemetery at Mt. Morgan Queensland and has been adapted for use as a grave marker. This is the first I have seen in its mint condition anywhere.!!
AUST04	Mt. Morgan Queensland, Australia.	Cast iron grave marker (Similar in style to Etna). No Makers Mark
AUST05	Richmond Cemetery Richmond Queensland, Australia.	A rather plain cast Iron Marker with the words "Sacred to the memory of" cast into the top curved section. No Casters Foundry Plate.
AUST06	Richmond Cemetery Richmond Queensland, Australia.	Heavy plain cast Iron slab with the word Sacred incised round the top curve. No Makers mark.
AUST07	Melbourne Cemetery Melbourne Victoria, Australia.	Heavy cast iron surround and a cast iron head Marker which has a stone insert. (Very similar to Fort William in Scotland UK53) On the cast iron surround for the stone is the marks :- Smiths Patent Sun Foundry Glasgow.
AUST08	Melbourne Cemetery Melbourne Victoria, Australia.	Small cast iron plot number marker Galvanised. No Makers mark.
AUST09	Melbourne Cemetery Melbourne Victoria, Australia.	Cast iron plot Denomination or Compartment marker. CHURCH OF ENGLAND H COMPARTMENT.
AUST10	Mildura Cemetery Mildura Victoria, Australia.	Marble book on a cast iron stand. No Makers mark.
AUST11	Mildura Cemetery Mildura Victoria, Australia.	Not Cast Iron, but pressed steel grave marker. Maker unknown, but the only one seen up to now, Galvanised and a very expensive way of producing particularly if a one off. Possibly something which didn’t catch on.
AUST12	Mildura Cemetery Mildura Victoria, Australia.	Cast iron plot Denomination or Compartment marker. ROMAN CATHOLIC COMPARTMENT.
AUST13	Mildura Cemetery Mildura Victoria, Australia.	Cast iron plot Denomination or Compartment marker. CHINESE.
AUST14	Mildura Cemetery Mildura Victoria, Australia.	The Nun’s Chorus. A group of Nuns graves similar to the ones in West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide (see AUST21).
AUST15	Payneham Cemetery nr. Adelaide South Australia.	Cast iron marker thought at first to be typical Etna design. Stove enamelled Date and maker unknown but see AUST16. Below:- IN LOVING MEMORY OF RALPH STEPHENS AGED 2 YEARS. JULIA BAILEY 85. AMELIA STEPHENS 32. JULIA STEPHENS 67. ELIZABETH STEPHENS 71. Now under the control of the Payneham and Dudley Park Cemetery Trust. This is possibly a copy (using an original to provide a pattern) of an Etna Pattern from the Gorbals in Glasgow, Scotland. This is a very rare example and it is in very good condition due to it being Stove Enamelled. Date unknown.
AUST16	Payneham Cemetery nr. Adelaide South Australia.	Cast iron marker thought at first to be typical Etna design BUT on the back is a makers mark saying Smith & Wellstood Ltd., Bonnybridge Foundry, and on the stove enamelled inscription plate on the extreme bottom right beneath the surrounding line is the words "Simpson Fnls Adelaide." IN LOVING MEMORY OF ADA DEARLY BELOVED WIFE OF HANS CARL MAX HUSER DIED MAY 27 1907. AGED 23 YEARS. PEACEFUL BE THY SILENT SLUMBER, PEACEFUL IN THY GRAVE SO LOW. THOU NO MORE WILT JOIN OUR NUMBER. THOU NO MORE OUR SONG WILT KNOW. AUST16 is a similar pattern to AUST15 but without Stove Enamelling and losing its paint work by weathering. However it is also a rarity as the name plate is an enamelled metal plate.
AUST17	West Terrace Cemetery Adelaide South Australia.	Cast Iron Cross. No makers marks.
AUST18	West Terrace Cemetery Adelaide South Australia.	Cast Iron Cross. Stove enamelled. No makers mark. This is the only other marker with any stove enamelled items. Thought to be a copy of an original design from the Etna Foundry in Glasgow Scotland. IN LOVING MEMORY OF WALTER CAIRE DEARLY BELOVED HUSBAND OF MARY ELLEN CAIRE WHO DIED MARCH 18TH 1929 AGED 47 YEARS. AT REST.
AUST19	West Terrace Cemetery Adelaide South Australia.	Cast Iron Cross (Etna Pattern but no makers mark. Copy?) Painted silver with cast in letters. IN LOVING MEMORY OF MINNIE ROSE JOHNSON BELOVED WIFE & MOTHER OF GEORGE JOHNSON AND FAMILY.
AUST20	West Terrace Cemetery Adelaide South Australia.	Cast iron circle cross marker maker unknown:- SLAVCO RANTASA AGED 9 MONTHS BELOVED SON OF JAKOW & IRIS. DIED 1967 R.I.P.
AUST21	West Terrace Cemetery Adelaide South Australia.	A large burial plot with a collection of cast iron markers of members of the order of The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, founded and led By Mary McKillop. Australia’s first saint. Foundry Unknown. markers date from 1939 to 1990.
AUST22	The Cemetery Crystal Brook South Australia.	Inscription plate with cross. Copy of Etna design, no Makers Mark. (Grave No630B. Footpath W. Page 10 on the burial plan) F.TAYLOR DIED 27/6/1893. See also AUST23 for railings.

AUST31	Town Cemetery Jamestown South Australia.	This pair of cast Iron markers (pictures AUST31 & AUST32) from the Jamestown Town Cemetery are both of a type seen in Britain. AUST31 inscription reads:- IN FOND MEMORY OF GIRLY WILSON DIED MAY 19TH 1922 AGED 8 YEARS. This Cast Iron marker with the Etna cast mark on the back is similar to examples from Woodditton Cambridgeshire England. See UK30.
AUST32	Town Cemetery Jamestown South Australia.	This pair of cast Iron markers (pictures AUST31 & AUST32) from the Jamestown Town Cemetery are both of a type seen in Britain. AUST32 inscription reads:- SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF PATRICK TRAVERS WHO DIED JULY 18. 1908 AGED 12 YEARS AND NICHOLAS TRAVERS NEPHEW OF THE ABOVE WHO DIED MAY 30. 1928 AGED 13 YEARS. R.I.P. Another typical Etna design.
AUST33	Laura Town Cemetery Laura South Australia.	An ETNA Design of Cross (See Woodditton. Cambs. England, UK31) but no makers mark, therefore possibly a copy. PHILLAR WILKINSON DIED DEC. 14TH 1888. AGED 6 MONTHS.

AUST35	Laura Town Cemetery Laura South Australia.	An Etna derived pattern, but on the back is found both the ETNA cast mark plus the mark of Keipert & Co Crown Foundry Laura. (See AUST35 for rear view). SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF STEPHEN SCOTT DIED MARCH.3.1899 ERECTED BY HIS LOVING WIFECATHERINE. R.I.P.

AUST37	Laura Town Cemetery Laura South Australia.	This Grave marker Number Aust37 is cast Iron with a marble plate bolted on. Etna Makers plate cast into the back (see AUST38 for rear view). AUST41	Lobethal Cemetery Lobethal nr. Adelaide South Australia.	Cast iron frame with a marble plaque insert. Decorated 'IHS' lettering. This is at the Cemetery of Lobethal - or Valley of Praise, not far from Adelaide, South Australia. The cast iron frame is marked ‘Registered’ and ‘Metters’ The only cast Iron in the Cemetery where many of the old marble markers have been put together in Serried rows. AT REST HERBERT GEORGE WEINERT BORN DEC. 23. 1914 DIED JULY 5. 1916. See AUST42 for rear view.

AUST43	Town Cemetery Murray Bridge South Australia.	Aust 43. Marble plate in a cast iron surround from 1921. No Makers Mark. IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR DEAR LOVING DAUGHTER SYLVIA DORA WIERBRECHT WHO DIED JULY 15TH 1921. AGED 6 YEARS AND 10 MONTHS. (The rest is undecipherable).
AUST44	Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Pine Creek South Australia.	The Holy Trinity Lutheran Church yard. Cast iron trellis cross. No Makers Mark. IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE OFAGNES IDA KNAUERHASE DIED 28TH SEPT. 1901. AGED 17 MONTHS.
AUST45	Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Pine Creek South Australia.	AUST45 is rather Typical of Iron Lace or Trellis Type Crosses from Austria. No Makers Mark. This is one of two found in the cemetery at the side of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (see also AUST44). Late 19th century. Inscription undecipherable.
AUST46	Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Pine Creek South Australia.	Cast iron cross. No Makers Mark. Inscription undecipherable. This type of cross is seen on many Australian churches used as a finial each end of the roof.
AUST47	Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Pine Creek South Australia.	Cast iron cross. No Makers Mark. Inscription undecipherable. This type of cross is seen on many Australian churches used as a finial each end of the roof.
AUST48	Town Cemetery Quorn South Australia.	Plain Iron sun cross used as a finial. IN MEMORY OF EDITH, ALICE & JOHN GEORGE BREWSTER This cross caught my eye in the cemetery scene in the film "The Shirralee" and lead to me making my first trip to Australia to see it and many others in August 1994.

AUST58	Town Cemetery Kalgoorlie. Western Australia.	Five grave markers very similar to those of the Loreto Nuns buried in West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide. South Australia. These have painted name details whereas the Loreto Nuns have their name details cast into their markers. The Nuns here belong to the Order of Hospital Nuns of St John of God.
