Church of St Etheldreda, Hatfield (also known as Bishop's Hatfield), Hertfordshire.

Tomb of Sir Robert Cecil. First Earl of Salisbury. 1563 to 1612. White rod to Queen Elizabeth I.

The Earl is in his Garter Robes and lies on top of a large black slab resting on the shoulders of four of the Cardinal Virtues, Prudence, Justice, Fortitude & Temperence.

Beneath on another black slabis the symbolic message "that all men end the same way." A skeleton lies on a straw pallet. The monument was made by Maximilian Colt at a cost of £460. This was more than the cost of the Mortuary Chapel in which it stands!!
